History of Blue Jeans
During the time of the gold rush in California around 1853, it was very difficult to keep a fair supply of everyday items.
Finding out about this shortage of supply motivated the German immigrant Levi Strauss who was 24 years old at the time to make a trip to San Francisco from New York, his residence.
He was planning on cashing in on the hype of the Gold Rush and opening a branch of his brother’s dry goods business located in New York.
He brought along some dry goods, canvas to cover wagons and making tents and his sister and brother in law.
They opened up a store and started selling dry goods to miners along with some fancy linen and such.
Talking to a potential customer he was informed there was a strong need for good, strong pants. The customer told him they were not able to find a pair of pants that was tough enough to last the demands of their mining life style.
Birth of Denim Jeans
Levi used the canvas he had brought to make overalls. The overalls turned out pretty good and the miners like them except for being too rough and irritating.
Levi decided to use a cotton cloth Called “Serge De Nimes” from France. As time went on the fabric became popular as denim and they started calling the pants “Blue Jeans”.
A Nevada tailor with the name of David Jacobs told Levi about a way he had figured out and was making his pants much stronger and last longer. He was putting a metal rivet in the base of the fly and at the corners of the pockets.
David did not have enough money to get a patent for his invention and asked Levi if he was willing to pay for the cost of getting his rivets patented. In return he agreed to get the patent together.
Levi accepted to pay for the patent. Together they received U.S. Patent No. 139121 on May 20th, 1873. Later this day became the official birthday for Blue Jeans.
In 1886 the 2 horse design was first introduced.
Later on in 1936 they created the red tab on the rear pocket to make the jeans identifiable from a far away.
